Government of Nepal (GON) recognizes that childhood immunization is one of the most cost-effective health interventions and thus puts strong emphasis on immunization in national policies and plans. National Immunization Program (NIP) is one of the priority programs of GON. Nepal introduced Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in 1979 with three antigens in three districts. By the year 1988-89, the program expanded to all 75 districts of the country and included all six globally recommended antigens (BCG, DPT, Polio and Measles). |
Nepal is a signatory to the resolutions of World Health Assembly held in 1988, which aim at eradicating poliomyelitis, elimination of neonatal tetanus and control of measles. GON is committed to establish a strong and reliable surveillance mechanism for VPD and stresses its smooth and International WHO standard function. This is where the role and responsibility of IPD are based.

Programme for Immunization Preventable Diseases (IPD) formerly known as "Polio Eradication Nepal, PEN" is a collaborative programme of World Health Organization and Government of Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population. Presently IPD is supporting GON's endeavor in strengthening immunization program and surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs), namely Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP), Measles, Neonatal Tetanus (NT), and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) throughout the country utilizing its existing AFP surveillance infrastructure. IPD carries out its activities in close collaboration with Child Health Division (CHD), Epidemiology and Diseases Control Division (EDCD), and National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) under the Department of Health Services of Ministry of Health and Population. |
